STEPS Pathways Boarding College student Krystal has recently taken some significant steps towards an independent life that still makes it easy to ask for help when she needs it.
Krystal, who is diagnosed with epilepsy, participated in a one-on-one session facilitated by a STEPS Pathways College classroom trainer and coordinated by Student Support Officer Sarah. She was encouraged to develop her understanding of epilepsy and become more confident in advocating for herself and communicating her needs to others.
Supported by a trainer, Krystal contacted Epilepsy Action Australia and obtained a seizure management plan, a medical document that outlines her seizure types, triggers, care needs, emergency response steps, and key contact information. In developing and reviewing the plan, Krystal was able to learn more about strategies and supports to keep her safe.
This learning experience reflects several aspects of STEPS Pathways College’s ’10 Key Areas of Learning’ curriculum, particularly ‘Healthy Living Skills’. Additionally, she strengthened her skills in communication and self-advocacy, independent living, and community connections, giving her the confidence to live independently and be an active participant in her community while prioritising her wellbeing.
Epilepsy Action Australia representatives also attended STEPS Pathways College for annual staff training, which gave Krystal the opportunity to speak to professionals who closely understand her condition.
Through these conversations, Krystal demonstrated increased self-care and advocacy regarding her health needs and was motivated to continue wearing her medical ID bracelet. Originally purchased during a one-on-one support session when she first moved into her STEPS Pathways College housing, the bracelet helps ensure that those around her are best prepared to help her if she experiences a seizure.
We would like to thank Krystal for sharing her story. A crucial part of the STEPS Pathways College experience is empowering our students to advocate for themselves, and Krystal’s journey is a positive example of how we help young people with a disability and autism take an active role in decisions that affect their health and future.
If you are a young person with a disability who wants to learn how to live well and independently, or if you know someone who could benefit from STEPS Pathways College’s transformative educational experience, we would love to connect.
