Steven Hill, a local cricket player for the Queensland Veterans and Sunshine Coast Over 50s teams, has generously donated a high-quality cricket kit to STEPS Pathways College and its students.

Mr Hill won the cricket kit through a radio promotion and reached out to Michael Williamson, the Executive Manager of Business Partnerships for STEPS, to see if the STEPS Pathways College students could benefit from sports equipment.

Mr Williamson says that the donation was greatly appreciated by the students, as many of them are fans of cricket and watch games on television but have never had the opportunity to play themselves, particularly with high-quality equipment.

“Our STEPS Pathways College program is holistic and covers all aspects of a healthy and independent life, and that includes health and exercise,” Mr Williamson said.

“We educate our students on the necessity of regular exercise and being active on a regular basis, so donations like this give us new, exciting, and hands-on ways to encourage a healthy lifestyle.”

Mr Hill was invited to the STEPS Head Office in Caloundra, where he did a small presentation to the STEPS Pathways College students and Executive Principal Stephanie Patey.

“You could just see the excitement and happiness on the students’ faces,” Mr Williamson said.

“We were able to play a quick game, and it was great to get everyone involved in sport at a level they’re comfortable with. Having equipment like this cricket kit is actually a major confidence builder for so many students, since it gives them an opportunity to try new things.”

Thanks to Mr Hill’s generous donation, STEPS Pathways College students are able to engage in a fun sport and build capacity in their reflexes, decision-making, physical fitness, mental health and physical health.

Mr Hill and Mr Williamson are planning to host a coaching session for the STEPS Pathways College students to run through cricket activities, including the best way to hold and swing a bat, how to run in and bowl, and stretches and exercises to stay fit for sport.
