STEPS Pathways College has launched the Discovery Program, giving young adults with a disability and autism an opportunity to explore life as a Day College student before committing to enrolment.

The Discovery Program is a supportive introduction to the Day College, running one day a week over ten weeks at the campus in Caloundra. It’s open to young people with a disability and autism who are in Grades 10-12 or have recently left school.

Participants can meet trainers and students, experience real classroom and learning activities, and gain insight into what life at STEPS Pathways College is like.

Executive Principal of STEPS Pathways College Stephanie Patey said the Discovery Program was created to help young people and their families feel more confident about beginning a new chapter of their lives, offering a welcoming space to explore independence at their own pace.

“Every young person deserves the opportunity to develop their skills and discover their strengths, and the Discovery Program at STEPS Pathways College provides a safe and encouraging environment for this where participants feel genuinely supported and understood,” Stephanie said.

“We created the Discovery Program to make the transition to college life even smoother. It’s a great way to see if STEPS Pathways College is the best fit for you and explore the life-changing experiences we have to offer.”

Throughout the ten weeks, participants take part in elements of the College’s life skills curriculum, which focuses on building everyday independence, confidence, and social skills.

STEPS Pathways College is the first and only program of its kind in Australia, dedicated to supporting and guiding students as they develop the skills needed for independent living. Its Day College blends classroom learning with real-world experiences to help students build confidence and practical life skills.

Families, carers and support professionals are encouraged to explore the Discovery Program as a meaningful next step for young people with a disability and autism.

Funding for the Discovery Program is available through certain NDIS plans; if eligible, prospective participants will have no out-of-pocket expenses. Alternatively, participants can opt to self-fund the program. Funding options can be discussed with the STEPS Pathways College team.

The next cohort begins on Friday 17 July, and there are still spaces available for prospective students.
